On the day of the operation

On the day of the operation, you must be as rested and relaxed as possible and allow 2-3 hours for the procedure. Wear comfortable clothing and lunch lightly before hand. Some additional measures may be taken, postoperative instructions may be discussed and every additional question be answered.

In some cases, a light sedative may be administered and you will be asked to wear a surgical robe and covers for your head and shoes.

You will lie in an armchair and will be given anaesthetic eyedrops. One eye is covered so that only the other is exposed for the surgeon. An eyelid dilator will be used to keep the eyelids open so that the microkeratome - a special surgical precision apparatus which creates the flap - can pass over the eye. The only sensation you will have will be that of pressure. You will be asked to look at a light source under the surgical microscope and then the laser will be heard for approximately 40 seconds depending on the extent of correction.

The surgeon usually talks to the patient during the procedure which lasts approximately 5-10 minutes for each eye. The corrected eye is covered and then the procedure is repeated for the other one.

Right after the operation, your vision will be better than before the operation without your glasses, but you will feel as if you 're looking through fog. Tears may run from your eye and you will feel as if "you have sand in your eyes". This is perfectly normal.

Normally, after the operation, you will remain with your eyes closed for half an hour and then your eyes will be examined again. Your eyes will be covered with protective covers or glasses before you leave the clinic.
