How are the refractive abnormalities treated?
The classic way to deal with refractive pathologies is to use glasses and contact lenses. For different reasons, many people do not wish to wear them either because they are tired of using them for many years or for aesthetic or professional reasons or because they cannot tolerate contact lenses (intolerance, allergy, giant papillary conjunctivitis). For these persons there is an indication for refractive surgery intervention.
Refractive surgery includes all techniques which allow us to correct some ametropia either by altering the cornea curve or by placing special lenses in the eye. This procedure is carried out by specialized ophthalmologists. It is the equivalent of plastic and aesthetic surgery since we alter our cornea and many times is performed for aesthetic reasons.
The use of laser takes up a big part of ophthalmology and refractive surgery. Many cases of ametropias can be corrected with the use of excimer laser. All this is not new in ophthalmology. We already have a 20-year experience, while the evolution of laser technology allows us now to have significantly better functional results.
