Department of Medical Retina and Vitreo-Retina Surgery

Surgical Department

In our vitreo-retinal surgery department all surgical conditions of the retina are treated with techniques which are modified according to each patient's situation.

Conventional intervention in retina detachment with epidural implants and cryopexy or indirect laser or laser diopexy, with or without subretinal fluid drainage. The vitrectomy is a procedure which, in our department, most often, is performed with local anaesthesia on an outpatient basis. It allows the treatment of conditions such as retina detachment, macular holes, macular edema of various causes, the removal of epi- and subretinal membranes, the removal of vitreous, pro- and sub- retinal haemorrages, the translocation of the macula for subretinal neovascular membranes, the performance of sithotomy in branch veins occlusions, the performance of radiated optical neurotomy on central vein constriction, the treatment of complications following anterior segment surgery, the replacement of intraocular lenses in the ciliary sulcus in the absence of lens capsule and the anatomical reconstruction of selected injuries. It also allows the removal of certain intraocular tumors (internal resection of choroidal melanoma). Aside from the simple vitrectomy, one may use endolaser, indirect laser, endodiathermy, posterior segment phakoemulsification, epidural implants and depending on the situation, vitreous substitutes, such as air, SF6 or C3F8 gas or silicone. The vitrectomy may at the same time be combined with cataract surgery, keratomileusis or anti-glaucoma surgery. An histological examination of the vitreous or choroide may also be performed for diagnostic reasons in cases such as lemphoma, intraocular infections, tumors and uveitis.

The vitreo-retinal unit uses the Millenium, BAUSCH & LOMP, OPMI-VISU 200 microscope, ZEISS, vitrectomy lense systems (BIOM, Volk, Landers, Irrigating lenses) and indirect laser. Intravitreous implant placement (Vitrasert, ganciclovir implant).
